Australian Grand Prix: driver of the day

Kevin Magnussen put in an impressive performance at his debut race.

March 17, 2014 (F1 Plus / Rosie Baillie) - He became the first Danish driver to stand on the podium and the first rookie to finish second at his debut race since Jacques Villeneuve. My driver of the race is McLaren’s Kevin Magnussen.

It isn’t often we see a rookie join one of the big teams. They usually join a backmarker or midfield team and struggle towards the front of the grid for a few seasons, so it was brilliant to see a rookie join the sport with a bang.

Magnussen started fourth and passed a struggling Lewis Hamilton on the opening lap of the race to take third. He held onto his position to cross the the line third.

At one point it looked as if he might be able to spring an attack on second place man Daniel Ricciardo but was unable to due to fuel saving.

Ricciardo was disqualified from the results a few hours after the race as his car was found to have exceeded the fuel flow rate.

The team intend to appeal the decision but for the time being Magnussen is promoted to second, making him the first rookie to finish his debut race second since Jacques Villeneuve in 1996.

Other drivers worthy of a mention are Williams’ Valtteri Bottas and Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat.

Bottas looked set for a podium finish until his right rear wheel came loose after contact with a wall. He finished the race fifth, his best finish to date.

Kvyat had an impressive debut race finishing ninth, picking up two points for his team.
