Gutierrez switched to Europeans series in 2008 taking part in the Formula BMW Europe Championship. He dominated the series and won seven races.

As Gutierrez was in Mexico and a replacement driver was needed by the end of Free Practice 2, Sauber opted to use McLaren Test Driver Pedro de la Rosa instead.
He remained Sauber’s test and reserve driver for 2012 and continued in GP2 with Lotus ART, who were now known as Lotus GP. Gutierrez won three races and finished the season in third place.
At the end of the 2012 season Sauber confirmed that Gutierrez would race for them the following season.
Gutierrez finished his first F1 race in 13th place after qualifying 18th. The Mexican seemed to struggle during qualifying at the beginning of the year but performed well during races and improved throughout the year.
His first points score came at the Japanese Grand Prix where he finished seventh.
He will remain at Sauber for the 2014 season.
