Driver Bio
Fernando Alonso was born in Oviedo, Spain, in 1981 and he is he only Spanish driver to win a formula 1 title, something that he has done twice.
His father supported his career early on, and served him as mechanic during his Karting years. After climbing up through Spain’s racing categories becoming champion in the Euro Open Nissan Series in 2000. He then moved to Formula 3000 where he finished 4th earning the attention of Formula 1 recruiters.
Alonso decided to sign with Minardi, and even though the team’s car wasn’t reliable or competitive, he outscored his teammate and at times looked faster than better opponents (Benetton among them).
By now, his manager Flavio Briatore, usually with a good eye tor talent, hired him as a test driver for the 2002 season, doing 1642 laps in the process. Since then, the Spaniard's career began to rise at full speed.
In 2003, as official Renault driver, he jumped to the podium in his second and third races with the team, and then he got his first victory in a Grand Prix (Hungary), becoming the youngest driver (22 years) history to do so. In 2004 recorded one of his the best starts by going up from ninth place to third in the first corner of the U.S. Grand Prix circuit. This year he did not earned any victory; managing to finish 4h in the championship compared to 6th the year earlier. But the best was yet to come.
By 2005, Fernando Alonso became the youngest driver (24 years) to win a drivers' championship in Formula 1, taking the top honor of the legendary Emerson Fittipaldi. The tournament became a struggle between the Spanish and Kimi Raikkonen, but after winning the Chinese Grand Prix, Alonso beat the Finn in the drivers 'standings, and with the contribution of Giancarlo Fisichella gave Renault the constructors' title.
The Asturias born, repeated the feat with another crown in 2006, but this time his rival was no other but the seven-time champion Michael Schumacher, who extended the fight until the very last race of the season. The German also announced his retirement for which a new era was to begin full of new talents willing to the lead, among them, Alonso.
As early as December 2005 the new deal Alonso had with McLaren was announced, but he still another year in his contract, so he had to wait until the first race of the 2007 season to race behind the wheels of a MP-22.
His staging McLaren was not all what Alonso expected Alonso. The 2007 season was one of the roughest of his career and his car; the MP4/22 wasn’t the best car around. In addition, the intrigues in his own team and vocal confrontation with teammate Lewis Hamilton eventually take its toll at double world champion. It was a very close battle between him, his teammate and Raikkonen, the latter becoming champion in the last round.
Alonso decides to return "home" to Renault, and signs a contract for two years with Flavio Briatore’s team. However, sequels are usually never good, and Alonso finds that the French team offers him an uncompetitive car. Neither in 2008 nor in 2009 Alonso achieved much, in two years he finished in position he was not used to (fifth and ninth), although he collected two victories.
But everybody deserves and earns second chances, on September 30, 2009, after a mutual courtship, the team of his dreams, Ferrari, signed him for three years.
At the home of the Prancing Horse, Alonso found himself back with a tailor-made machine, the Ferrari F10, and Spanish shone from day one by winning the first race of the season in Bahrain, leaving behind Sebastian Vettel and Felipe Massa. During his first season, Fernando undergoes many ups and downs, but he managed to arrive at the final straight of the season with the championship in clear sight, especially after winning the GPs in Italy, Singapore and Korea.
The fight with the Red Bull of Webber and Vettel became fierce, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and Alonso presented himself hopeful but reserved. However, things did not turn out as expected. A bad decision from the team left him stuck in 7th behind Vitaly Petrov, which was not enough for him to stop Vettel from snatching the title from him (the German won the race).
By 2011, the team showed motivated despite the debacle of a few months ago, but the understood the relevance that Red Bull and his star driver Vettel, who appeared to be riding on a momentum.
It happened that the Ferrari F150, was not as good as expected, and Fernando had to fight all year to keep himself up in the standings. A single, isolated victory on English soil looked great given the adversity, but indeed, it was obtained deservedly supported by strong teamwork and hi errorless driving. Ultimately, his performance was positive in view of the 10 podiums and five second places.
It became clear that Alonso was above his Ferrari, since his teammate never climbed to the podium and score only half of the points of the Spaniard.
Ferrari has an uphill task ahead, and perhaps changes in regulations might help to stop the evolution of Red Bull and to keep McLaren at bay.
