Driver Bio
Rosberg is a German-Finnish driver born in Wiesbaden, Germany in 1985. His passion for cars runs in the family, because his father is Keke Rosberg, Formula 1 champion in 1982.
Everything began with karting, passing successfully through the German Formula BMW and the Formula 3 Euroseries, which ended opening the door to join the first GP2 season ever (2005) with the ART Grand Prix GP2 team. At this level, Rosberg became champion, which served as a springboard to the most important auto-racing category in the world, Formula 1.
The Williams Team decided to give him a chance (his father also raced for this team), first for testing purposes in 2005 and the following year as the team’s official race driver along with Mark Webber.
The year was 2006, and at only 20 years of age, Nico debuted in the Formula 1 in the Grand Prix of Bahrain, finishing in seventh place despite a minor incident with Heidfeld that sent him to the end of the line so he had to catch up. Rosberg impressed not only because of his determination, but also because he registered the fastest lap in his first race, the youngest in history (still stands). A third place start (pole) in Malaysia followed, but the fragile Williams gave up too many times in that season leaving him with only two points and without better results.
For the 2009 season, the team joined forces with Toyota for its engines. Nico improved to accumulate 20 points with a ninth place in the standings. This year offered an excellent glimpse of his talent with an impressive fourth place in the Brazilian Grand Prix after overtaking Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica.
After two seasons with plenty of ups and downs with Williams, Rosberg and Mercedes GP agreed on a deal, making it clear that the biggest reason for leaving Williams was the lack of competitiveness. The German team had acquired Brawn GP, which just a year earlier had been Honda and had produced the car that made Jenson Button champion. A lot of changes and adjustments were taking place, within the team; however, its financial stability, good management and the news driver’s line-up (Schumacher was on board) seemed to show that a great future was ahead of them.
Sharing duties duties with his idol, seven-times champ Michael Schumacher, who returned to the track after a three-year hiatus, might have looked daunting.
The 2010 season went below expectations, nevertheless Rosberg managed to get three podiums for the German team (in Malaysia, China and Great Britain). The take away from the season was that Rosberg looked strong all year-round and outscored his intimidating partner.
For 2011, Mercedes GP promised improvements in performance, but the reality that struck everyone was the superiority of the Red Bull was plainly abysmal. Despite the efforts, the team could not produce a winning car. Not a single time Rosberg climbed to the podium, his point count got reduced significantly (from 142 to 89) and "Schumi" approached him in performance.
The new rules for 2012 might have an effect on the evolution and hence dominance of the Red Bull. If Mercedes GP gets finds a way to shorten difference, Nico can fight for that elusive first victory in Formula 1.
