At aged 15 he moved to Europe to further his motorsport career and began taking part in various Formula Renault Championships and won the Italian championship in 2004. His championship win earned him a test with Minardi at Misano.

The following year he joined the Renault Driver Development Programme and took part in the World Series by Renault championship.

It wasn’t plain sailing for Maldonado though. He was handed a nine-race ban following the Monaco race where he ran into a marshall who was attending to an accident during a practice session.

Maldonado returned to World Series by Renault the following year and finished third overall. He would have won the championship had he not been disqualified from the Misano race due to a technical infringement.

In 2007 he graduated to GP2 after being signed by Trident Racing and won the Monaco Grand Prix. He finished his GP2 rookie year 11th overall as he was unable to take part in the last four races due to a broken collarbone.

The following year he remained in GP2 switching to Piquet Sports where he finished fifth overall and won the Belgian Grand Prix.

He switched teams again in 2009, joining ART where he was outperformed throughout the year by Nico Hulkenberg who won the championship, while Maldonado finished sixth.

Maldonado’s time came in 2010 when he moved to Rapax and won the championship in Monza and won six consecutive feature races during the season.

Towards the end of the 2010 Maldonado got behind the wheels of the Williams and HRT (Hispania Racing Team) cars during the Abu Dhabi Young Driver Test.

At the end of the 2010 season Williams announced that Maldonado would replace Hulkenberg at the team for the following season.

An uncompetitive car and his inexperience in Formula One made his rookie year a tough one. He gained a reputation for driving recklessly and causing incidents, namely crashing into Lewis Hamilton in Monaco and swiping across in front of Hamilton at the Belgian Grand Prix.

He finished his rookie year in F1 19th overall and scored just one point.
Williams re-signed Maldonado for 2012, where he took his first win at the Spanish Grand Prix. He was unable to replicate his win or score and was involved with a number of incidents throughout the year and managed to pick up three penalties during the Belgian Grand Prix weekend.

He stayed with Williams for the 2013 but again struggled to pick up points in an uncompetitive car, resulting in him picking up just one point and finishing 18th overall.

After three years at Williams, Maldonado has made the switch to Lotus for the 2014 and will partner up with Romain Grosjean.

Car number: Maldonado chose the number 13 because in his native Venezuela that number is not considered unlucky and has a lot of positive connotations with sport in his home country as very successful baseball players has wore it.
