Driver Bio
Born in Brazil, in 1972, Rubens Barrichello, proved its power over a car by winning 5 championships in karting, after that he went to Europe to compete in the Lotus series, with only 18.
At 19 he decided to participate in the Formula 3000 championship, where he finished 3rd, a position that earn him a seat in a Jordan Grand Prix car 1993. Everything was going well in his career until an accident during a training session for the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994 changed him forever. The doctors managed to save his life, but it was the accident that followed on the same track two days later, where his mentor, idol and almost paternal figure, Ayrton Senna lost his life that really had an effect on him. His season ended with a decent sixth, including a pole at Spa-Francorchamps for the Belgian GP.
Rubens relationship with Eddie Jordan went from bad to worse in the next few years, and the team lack success did not help to calm the storm. In 1997, he signed with a new team, Stewart Grand Prix, which had cars well below expectations. In 1999, after two years with no results, he finished seventh in standings and visited the podium three times (all 3rd places). This was enough for Ferrari to bring him over to form a pair with no other than Michael Schumacher.
With the “house of Maranello”, Barrichello earns his first win after 128 Grand Prix, making him the driver with the most races before winning. Once in Ferrari, the Brazilian established himself as one of the best in the circuit, finishing third, second, fourth and second from 2001 to 2004, thanks in part to overwhelming superiority of the Prancing Horse cars and company structure.
After a disappointing 2005, Barrichello signed with Honda, and things did not go as expected for three years until the Japanese automaker decided to retire from the Formula 1. In this moment, Honda’s team assets were acquired by its Principal, Ross Brawn (former Ferrari director few years back), and Rubens decides to continue racing for the team, now under the new name, BrawnGP.
In this new career phase, a new air of success arrived, because BrawnGP did have a good car, and it claimed both championships: constructors and drivers (for Jenson Button). Barrichello was third in standings, jumped to the podium six times and won twice.
In 2010, the Brazilian agreed to race for Williams, which seems to be recovering from years of financial constraints, and offered a competitive car. The year did no end well, but it showed improvement within the organization, and Rubens helped given his vast experience. 2011 promises to be even better for the British team, and Barrichello will keep himself on the track to increase his Grand Prix all-time participation record of more than 300.
