February 6, 2012 (F1plus team).- It seems that we will have another “ugly dukling” on the grid. Scuderia Toro Rosso just revealed its new car, the STR07 for the 2012 Season. Young drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Éric Vergne unfolded what will be their Formula 1 track transportation machine for the this year.
The presentation marked the third and final car launch to come from Jerez on Monday, with Sauber having uncovered its C31 in the morning before World Champions Red Bull Racing released photographs of its RB8.
The car follows the trend of having a step between the nose and the front of the chassis, but retains the innovative double floor concept from last year's car.
Team principal Franz Tost said he had full confidence in his team ahead of the start of the new season.
"I hope that we have designed a good car and I am convinced we have two good drivers," Tost said. "I'm also convinced that we will have a successful season."
Tost added that he was aiming for seventh or possibly sixth in the constructors' championship and that his target was based on the resources available to the team.
"In terms of resources, as far as I can estimate and in comparison to the other teams, we are in the good midfield," he said. "I expect that we are in seventh position and this is also the position I expect to reach in the constructors' championship."
Toro Rosso ended the 2011 season with a high note by being really competitive to the point of threating Sauber and Force India. However, in a shocking move both drivers, Jaime Alguersuari and Sebastian Buemi, were replaced by Daniel Ricciardo and jean-Eric Vergne.
Ricciardo and Vergne – respective British F3 Champions of 2009 and 2010, as well as being the latest pair of runners-up in Formula Renault 3.5 – make up an all-new line-up, with the 22-year-old Australian having spent 11 races on loan to HRT last season; the 21-year-old Frenchman, on the other hand, will be one of two Formula 1 rookies when the new season begins in Melbourne next month.
Ricciardo will give the STR7 its first run at Jerez on Tuesday morning.
