Sauber duo encouraged by top six finishes

Both drivers, Kobayashi and Perez, finished well into de points zone with a superb 5th (later turned into a 4th) and 6th place respectively.

HOCKENHEIM, Germany, July 22, 2012 (AFP) - Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Perez were delighted with the pace of their cars after climbing from the back of the field to fifth (but now 4th after Vettel penalization to fifth) and sixth for Sauber in Sunday's German Grand Prix.

Both Japanese Kobayashi and Mexican Perez, who qualified 12th and 17th respectively for the Hockenheim race, showed strong pace throughout the race and thanks to some excellent overtaking and well-executed two-stop strategy, brought home 18 points for the Swiss-based team.

In spite of his result, 25-year-old Kobayashi was convinced he could have finished in a better position if he had qualified better.

"I am very happy for the team that we have managed to get a good result again." He said.

"We have been unlucky in the two most recent races, and also had a bad qualifying yesterday.

"The performance of our car, especially in the dry, is really strong. If we only had qualified better we could have achieved even more today.

"At the beginning of the race it was a bit difficult on the medium tyres, but our strategy was good. Considering where we came from, 18 points is an excellent result."

Perez, 22, suggested having to pit earlier than planned with a possible puncture had hampered his chances at finishing even further up the field.

"My strategy was a little bit compromised because I had to do my first pitstop a bit earlier than planned," he said.

"I felt something strange on the left hand side of the car - perhaps it was a puncture - but I don't really know yet what it was. This obviously meant we had to extend the later stint and I ended up with quite old tyres."
