Di Resta: "We failed to deliver today"

Force India's Paul Di Resta qualified down in 17th place after a mix-up on the pit-wall meant he was on old tyres at the wrong time
Saturday, May 25, 2013

May 25th, 2013 (F1Plus / Chris Cameron-Dow) - Paul Di Resta will start Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix from 17th on the grid after his Force India team did not leave enough time for him to put new on a new set of intermediate tyres towards the end of Q1. The Scot was left out on old, worn tyres that simply did not have enough grip to deliver the lap time required to progress to Q2.

Changeable conditions, like those seen in qualifying today, always place a strong emphasis on timing. Di Resta needed a new set of tyres late in Q1 when the track was still wet but drying quickly, but the team did not leave enough time for a pitstop and Di Resta was left to struggle round with no rear grip to a disappointing grid position. The other Force India of Adrian Sutil qualified 8th, showing that the car has plenty of pace around the streets of Monte Carlo.

Di Resta now faces an uphill battle in Sunday's race, as it is very difficult to pass at Monaco. He and Sutil have already shown a few times this season that Force India have produced a quick car, but that advantage will be partly negated by the tight and twisty circuit. Di Resta is likely to have quite a long afternoon of following the cars in front. He will want to score points, but that will be a significant challenge.

Sutil is well-placed for points, starting from eighth on the grid. The Force India has shown itself to be kind to the 2013 Pirelli tyres, which could help Sutil to make up a place or two during the race.
