May 26th, 2013 (F1Plus / Chris Cameron-Dow) - Nico Rosberg has taken his second career victory and first for Mercedes in 2013 with a controlled performance around the tight and twisty streets of Monte Carlo. Rosberg took pole position yesterday and led every lap of today's race. The Red Bull pair of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber finished second and third with Rosberg's Mercedes team-mate, Lewis Hamilton, fourth.
It was a race of many incidents and saw two safety car appearances and a red flag. Felipe Massa replicated his Saturday practice crash in turn 1, destroying both ends of his Ferrari and taking a severe impact to his neck. In the flurry of pitstops that occurred during the ensuing safety car period, Lewis Hamilton lost second place, ending up behind the Red Bulls where he eventually finished.
The next major incident was caused when Pastor Maldonado had a run on Max Chilton on the outside on the approach to Tabac. Chilton moved across, forcing Maldonado into the barrier and lifting the front of his car off the ground. Maldonado went straight on into the barrier in Tabac, and left bits of the absorbant barrier strewn across the track. Race control had no choice but to bring out the red flag. When the race resumed, behind the safety car, Fernando Alonso was told to let Sergio Perez through. Alonso had skipped the Nouvelle chicane during a battle with Perez, and the stewards deemed that he had gained an advantage from the incident.
The final safety car came out when Romain Grosjean drove into the back of Daniel Ricciardo's Toro Rosso, mounting the back of Ricciardo's car and ripping off its rear wing. Ricciardo retired immediately, but Grosjean attempted to carry on. Ultimately, he was unable to do so due to damage to his front suspension.
The race saw strong results for Adrian Sutil, who finished fifth for Force India, and Jean-Eric Vergne, who finished eighth for Toro Rosso. Fernando ALonso will be disappointed with his seventh place, after Ferrari had looked competitive throughout the weekend.
