Vettel romps to victory in Canada

The reigning World Champion was peerless around the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve as he took his third win of 2013
Sunday, June 9, 2013

June 9th, 2013 (F1Plus / Chris Cameron-Dow) - The 2013 Canadian Grand Prix delivered 70 laps of fast, furious action, in which it was clear that the drivers were pushing their cars and themselves to the limits. For Sebastian Vettel, the limit was just that little bit faster than everyone else, which allowed him to take a comfortable victory, 14 seconds of title rival Fernando Alonso. Lewis Hamilton finished third for Mercedes.

Vettel's pace was such that he lapped everyone up to and including Jean-Eric Vergne in sixth place. In the present era of very stable regulations, it is extremely unusual to see that many cars being lapped, which was a great tribute to the performance of Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull.

Fernando Alonso delivered a typically aggressive drive to finish second from sixth on the grid. He needed to take as many points as possible in order to stay in the championship fight, and delighted the many Ferrari fans in the stands by passing Lewis Hamilton in a close and thrilling fight in the closing stages of the race to secure 18 points for himself.

Valtteri Bottas, who qualified a career-best third yesterday in tricky wet conditions, was unable to convert his grid position into a points finish. The Williams car was simply not quick enough, and despite running sixth for a while in the early stages of the race, Bottas had to settle for 14th place, well over a lap behind race winner Vettel.

Ferrari's Felipe Massa had a very strong afternoon, more or less the opposite of Bottas's race. The Brazilian came from 16th on the grid to finish eighth, driving aggressively and providing plenty of entertainment as he made his way through the field. Force India recorded a double points finish, with Di Resta seventh and Sutil tenth. Toro Rosso also had a good day, with Jean-Eric Vergne finishing a career-best sixth.

Kimi Raikkonen finished ninth for Lotus. While that may not be a spectacular result for the man who won the season-opening Australian Grand prix, it was his 24th consecutive points finish, which equals the record held by Michael Schumacher. Considering how competitive this year's Lotus is, it is quite likely that Raikkonen will hold the record outright after the next grand prix.
