Hulkenberg put a smile on Sauber today

The German qualified 10th while his teammate 14th for Sunday's race at Nurburgring.

July 6th, 2013 (F1plus).- It’s been rough year for Sauber so far, and lately with all the gossip around its financials, it can’t be nice being part of that. But hey, it is still Formula 1.

Despite all that, today, an inspired Nico Hulkenberg managed to put a smile on his bosses at the Sauber's garage, when he was able to sneak into Q3 during the qualifying session.

The German, will start his home Grand Prix from 10th on the grid, four spot ahead of his teammate Esteban Gutierrez.

Hulkenberg opted not to have a competitive lap in Q3 to safe tyres and concentrate in taking points; something he feels is an attainable goal.

“To reach Q3 today has been a success for us. I am confident we can achieve a good result tomorrow.

“I didn’t set a time in Q3, so I am free to choose my tyres for the start of the race tomorrow. I am convinced that will be an advantage.

“The team told me that P6 was possible today, but today it’s Saturday and the race is what counts, as you only get points tomorrow.“ Hulkenberg said.

Things did not go that smooth for the Mexican who has been basically out-qualified by Hulkenberg in every single occasion. Nevertheless, Gutierrez feels optimistic about given that 14th, has been his best start (along with Malaysia) position this year.

“Today is a step forward for us. We worked with a lot of different set-ups yesterday and were able to make the right conclusions from the data we gathered. I was able to attack and get a lot out of the car in qualifying.

However, I still have to improve. Nico did a fantastic lap and it’s challenging, but I will keep working to improve my performance level, especially in qualifying.” Said Gutierrez.
