Austrian GP coming back to F1 in 2014

Another track was added to the cluttered calendar that was set for 20 races.

VIENNA, Austria, July 23, 2013 (AFP) - Formula One will return to Austria in July 2014 after an 11-year break, F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone and Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz said Tuesday.

The two men "have reached an agreement that Formula One will return to the (Austria region) Styria already next year, to the Red Bull Ring at Spielberg," a joint statement said.

The energy drink company, headed by Austrian billionaire and F1 team owner Mateschitz, stunned the formula one world with the news that was delivered via a brief statement early on Tuesday.

Austria last hosted a grand prix, held at the same Spielberg circuit then known as the A1-Ring, in 2003.

However, subsequent media reports, including by the German news agencies SID and DPA, clarified that the race will in fact only take place on July 6 next year if "all necessary regulatory approvals" are given.

The last time a Formula One race was held in Austria was in 2003, when Ferrari's Michael Schumacher took the chequered flag at the A1 Ring, as the since-modernised Spielberg track was then called.

The exact schedule for 2014 is due to be finalised by governing body the International Automobile Federation (FIA) in September, with Winter Olympics host city Sochi in Russia another new venue to be included.
