A second night race in 2014?

The 2014 calendar could be set for two night races, meaning that Singapore won't be the the only one hosting a race under artificial light.

Septmeber 10th, 2013 (F1plus).- Confirmation on the news will come in the next week or so. Rumours earlier in the season hinted at the possibility of the Sakhir circuit hosting a night race.

It is thought that Bahrain circuit officials want a night race in 2014 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the first Bahrain Grand Prix.

Although 2014 will not be the tenth Bahrain grand prix, because the race was removed from the calendar in 2011 due to the island Kingdom's civil unrest outbreak, it will be the tenth anniversary of the first race in 2004.

Zayad Al Zayani, the chairman of the Bahrain International Circuit, confirmed in Monza that a official announcement on the 2014 race will come in the next week.

Speaking to AUTOSPORT Al Zayani said: "We requested from Bernie not to be the first grand prix of the year because we are undergoing a major refurbishment of our track to commemorate the 10th anniversary.

"We didn’t want to be squeezed for time."

Alzayani said earlier this year that: "We are looking at many options.

"A night race could be one of them, but it is not the only one. There are pros and cons to doing it."

It appears the 'pros' have won the day, with European publications Speed Week (Germany) and Italiaracing (Italy) reporting that the deal was agreed between Alzayani and Bernie Ecclestone at Monza at the weekend.

Speed Week said the news will be confirmed 'in the coming days', while Italiaracing said the work to install the lighting systems should be complete by February.

The refurbishment of the track has caused the pushing back of the race date to a provisional fifth slot on the 2014 calendar, revealed in the draft schedule released just prior to the Italian Grand Prix.

The round had been in contention for a season-opener slot but track officials requested it have a later date so upgrades could be made to the circuit's lighting system.

It is unclear whether the race will be a complete night race, like in Singapore, or a dusk to night race like in Abu Dhabi.
