Vettel hails "phenomenal" Red Bull

Sebastian Vettel took pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix, despite running only once in Q3 and not even being on the track at the end of the session

September 21st, 2013 (F1Plus / Chris Cameron-Dow) - Sebastian Vettel has taken pole position for tomorrow's Singapore Grand Prix, in a Red Bull car he described as "phenomenal" after qualifying. Vettel was so confident after setting a quick lap at the start of Q3 that he chose not to run again in the session, and instead watched from inside the Red Bull garage as his rivals tried in vain to better his lap time.

Vettel described the experience of watching from the garage: “It was a strange feeling at the end of Q3. It’s already strange when you stand in the garage with only two minutes left in the session, but much worse when you see the others making their final attempt and there’s nothing you can do!

"I was watching the sector times closely with Romain, Nico and Mark in particular. Mark started with a purple time in sector one, then Nico went purple in sector two and then Romain, but fortunately my last sector was fast enough to just stay ahead. It’s a great feeling as it could have gone wrong, but I’m very happy with the result. The car has been phenomenal all weekend."

Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg qualified second, less than a tenth of a second off Vettel's pace, confirming Red Bull's expectation that Mercedes would be quick in qualifying. Vettel said, "Yesterday the gap to the front was a bit of a surprise, but today was a bit more what we expected with the Mercedes being so close.”

If Vettel can win the Singapore Grand Prix, he will go into the final six races of the season with a championship lead of at least 60 points over Fernando Alonso. Considering that Alonso is only seventh on the grid, Vettel's lead could be quite a big larger than that.
