"We need luck every weekend" - Alonso

Despite finishing in second place, Alonso remains downbeat on Ferrari’s performance
Sunday, September 22, 2013

SINGAPORE, September 22nd, 2013 (F1Plus / Jacob Polychronis) - Fernando Alonso has all but written off the season after Sebastian Vettel increased his championship lead to 60 points last night in Singapore.

Alonso, who began the race in seventh, soared to a second place finish after a fantastic start off the line. Nonetheless, Alonso believes that only luck will help him claim his third world championship.

“The gap is increasing every weekend. We need to be honest with ourselves and know that we need a lot of luck. We don’t need luck in just Korea, we need it every weekend."

Despite essentially conceding the world championship to Vettel for 2013, Alonso was pleased with the result.

“For us it tastes like a victory today.”

A two stop strategy left Alonso with the task of completing 36 laps on the prime tyre, a task which he soundly executed.

“We committed to the best strategy when we pitted under the safety car. We were controlling the pace in the last stint, thanks to the gap we managed to build.”

“We decided to do something different. We were not at the level we should be so we tried different things and it paid off in the end with a fantastic second place.”

A fantastic start

Contributing to the second place result was Alonso’s start when the lights went out. Before turn three, Alonso had climbed four positions to third in a brilliant display of driving.

“The start was very good again. There’s always people going left and right but I managed to choose the right line. Then we were third which was already a good result for us…”

With six races remaining, Alonso needs to gain ten points per race to be on par with Vettel at season's end. Poor qualifying performances, coupled with slow development, ensures that this scenario is highly unlikely to occur.

Furthermore, Fernando Alonso has been reprimanded by FIA stewards for stopping on-track to carry Mark Webber as a passenger after the race was finished.
