September 22nd, 2013 (F1Plus / Chris Cameron-Dow) - Felipe Massa finished sixth in the Singapore Grand Prix, exactly where he started, after a race that included some frustration and some aggressive attacking driving.
When the lights went out, Massa made a flying start, but found his way blocked by other cars in the first corner which prevented him from taking advantage of his surge off the line. From then on, he was stuck behind other cars, but could not find a way past on the twisty Marina Bay street circuit.
When the safety car came out following Daniel Ricciardo's crash on lap 25, Ferrari pitted both their drivers, and opted to split their strategy. Alonso was given a fresh set of medium tyres which had to last him to the end of the race. Massa went onto a set of supersoft tyres, knowing that he would have to make another stop later in the race. But unfortunately, Massa found himself stuck behind Paul Di Resta, who was also on the supersoft tyres, and Massa could not overtake.
When Massa pitted for his third and final stop, Di Resta did the same, with the consequence that they emerged from the pits with Di Resta still in front, to Massa's frustration. But then a few laps from the end Di Resta crashed out, which freed Massa to go after the cars in front that were on worn tyres. A few strong overtaking moves later, and Massa was in sixth place, where he finished.
Massa said after the race: "Given everything that happened in today’s race, sixth place is a really good result. After a fantastic start, at the first corner I found myself stuck inside the cars that had braked early and, at that point I lost places instead of making up some. From then on, I was always stuck behind other cars and we all know how hard it is to overtake at this track.
"When the Safety Car came out, we had two options: to fit the Medium tyres, with which we weren’t sure to go all the way to the end, or the Supersofts, to try and regain some places. We went for the second option, but Di Resta was ahead of me on the same tyres and so I was stuck behind him. In the final stint after the third stop, I managed to retake sixth place, making the most of the fact that many were struggling with their tyres.
"It was tough from start to finish and I am very happy to have brought home a good points haul”.
