Pastor Maldonado sat down with F1plus after the Singapore Grand Prix to discuss his frustrations

SINGAPORE, September 22nd, 2013 (F1Plus / Jacob Polychronis) - Pastor Maldonado had his best improvement on grid position for the season in Singapore, climbing seven positions from 18th on the grid to finish 11th on Sunday night.

Maldonado took some time to speak with F1plus after the race, where his feelings were of disappointment rather than joy.

“We have to win, not to be P11. It was better than qualy but it’s not where I want to be.”

Maldonado happy with personal performance

The Venezuelan, who was pleased with his personal performance, wholly attributed finishing outside the points to the underperforming Williams FW35.

“I think I have more potential to explore. I got more than 100% from the car today considering I had to manage the tyres and everything.

“I think today it was possible to be in the points. But we need to accept the result of today.”

The Singapore Grand Prix is widely regarded by drivers to be the toughest physical race of the year. Nonetheless, Maldonado feels at home around the Marina Bay Street Circuit, having previously performed well there.

“I think the tough circuits I have always been very strong. Even last year I was fighting for the podium here and starting from the front row. I think I am different at circuits like these.”

A poor choice of tyres

As per usual, the Pirelli tyres have come under heavy scrutiny this weekend. For much of the race, drivers were too cautious to overtake because of their fragility. The prime tyre however, simply did not function properly under the extreme conditions.

“The medium compound in my opinion was too hard for this kind of circuit, it was not working properly. They were definitely expecting these tyres to work better in this heat, but they are just too hard. Especially in our car, they were not working all weekend.”

Pessimistic ahead of Korea

Despite Sunday night’s impressive race performance from Maldonado, the Williams driver’s expectations remain restricted.

“(We will do) nothing special in Korea to be honest. The car will be the same, maybe we will have some new parts but we need to be realistic. The car won’t be very good in qualifying again but we will keep pushing.”

The highest position in which Maldonado has qualified this year has been 13th. Adding to his tally of one championship point will remain unlikely should the car’s Saturday performances not improve.
