Rosberg: Red Bulls were "just too quick today"

November 2nd, 2013 (F1Plus / Chris Cameron-Dow) - Nico Rosberg qualified third for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, behind the Red Bull pair of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel. At this stage of the weekend, Mercedes are "best of the rest" after Red Bull, which as Rosberg has said is the team's aim for this event.

Rosberg was not thrilled with his final lap in Q3, but accepted that he probably would not have had the pace to challenge Webber and Vettel even with a perfect lap. Rosberg will line up alongside Lewis Hamilton in the other Mercedes on the second row of the grid for Sunday's race.

With three races left in the season, Rosberg is sixth in the drivers' points table, four points behind Mark Webber and 15 points behind Lewis Hamilton. Given Webber's lack of reliability this season, there is every possibility that Rosberg could overhaul the small advantage the Australian has over him. It's less likely, but still possible, that Rosberg could finish the season with more points than Hamilton.

If he does not manage to catch Hamilton by the end of the season, it will make 2013 the first year that Rosberg has finished behind his team-mate on points since joining Mercedes in 2010. Rosberg beat Michael Schumacher three years in a row during Schumacher's return to Formula One.

Rosberg described his qualifying session after Saturday's action:

"It's great to have another positive Saturday for our team. Again we are the best of the rest which is our aim for the weekend and starting from P3 and P4 are great positions for us to score lots of points in the Constructors' Championship.

"My last lap in Q3 wasn't great today but there was only a small chance to improve my time anyway. Mark and Seb were just too quick today for me to get on the front row but I'm confident that we can have a good race from here tomorrow."
