November 16th, 2013 (F1Plus / Chris Cameron-Dow) - Esteban Gutierrez has been handed a 10-place grid penalty for dangerously impeding Pastor Maldonado during the first part of qualfiying for the United States Grand Prix.
During Q1, Gutierrez was weaving on his approach to the final corner of a warm-up lap, while Maldonado was on a flying lap not too far behind him. Gutierrez was going so slowly that Maldonado caught him at significant speed and had to cut the final corner to avoid what would have been a serious accident.
Shortly after the incident, the stewards announced that they would investigate the incident after qualifying. A review of the video footage convinced the stewards that Gutierrez's actions were unnecessary and dangerous, and they accordingly handed hiim a 10-place grid penalty.
Gutierrez had his second strongest qualifying session of the season, making it through to Q3 and setting the 10th fastest lap time. However, his Sunday has effectively now been ruined in advance, as he will start from a lowly 20th on the grid.
Gutierrez is not the only driver to have received a grid penalty for Sunday's race. Jenson Button was penalised three places on the grid for passing a car under red flags during FP1 on Friday. Charles Pic has a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change.
Max Chilton was found to have impeded Pastor Maldonado and Adrian Sutil during today's Q1 session. As a result, Chilton has been handed a drive-through penalty that he must serve within 5 laps of the start of Sunday's race.
