Marussia and Caterham consider the fight for 10th place still open

Abiteboul believes Caterham truly deserves to beat its rivals; Booth, on the other hand, thinks that Marussia has done enough

Interlagos, BRAZIL, November 22nd, 2013 (F1Plus / Bruno Ferreira) - Although the Constructors’ Championship has been decided since  the Indian GP, with another title for Red Bull, there is an important situation that is still at stake in the Brazilian Grand Prix this Sunday.

Marussia and Caterham are once again fighting for 10th place in the standings, which gets the spotlight as the winner will receive substantial money prize from the FIA.

With only one race to go, Russian team Marussia has the upper hand as a result of Jules Bianchi’s 13th place in the Malaysian Grand Prix. However, the battle is not over, as Caterham realistically can reverse the situation.

If either the Caterham drivers finish the race at Interlagos in 13th position and ahead of Marussia, it would be enough for the Malaysian team to overtake its rivals – as Caterham has three 14th place finishes against Marussia’s one. Such a situation already happened before, as Caterham took 10th place in the standings at the final round of 2012 season, also in Brazil.

Caterham’s team principal Cyril Abiteboul thinks his squad deserves the 10th position. “I think it will be essentially costly for the morale of the team. Everybody believes that we deserve it. All due respect, I think we both have done a good job, but the figures tend say we deserve it just a little bit more than those guys”, he said.

The possibility of rain on Sunday makes him even more confident. “Each time we’ve had rain on Saturday in particular we’ve been able to do something. We like rain, so let’s see on Sunday.”

John Booth, team principal of Marussia, believes the 10th place would be a perfect reward for his team. “I think I pretty much agree with Cyril on his take on it. It’s the sporting matter that is more important. We are the smallest team, we operate with the smallest budget, but we are racers and we want to improve. Tenth place would be a massive plus for the guys in the factory”, he reckons.

Although Caterham has lately been showing better performances, Booth believes that Marussia has done enough to deserve the position. “There has been a large spell in the middle of the year when Caterham looked much stronger than us. But it’s been a long, long season. We took that 10th place in Malaysia. The last update we brought to the car of any significance was Barcelona, so it’s been a long old season hanging on to that 10th place. It’s been pretty nerve-wracking to be truthful”, he said.
