Webber realistic after low key qualifying show

Mark Webber is hoping to challenge for victory in the Brazilian Grand Prix, but admitted it will be challenging from fourth on the grid

SAO PAULO, November 23rd, 2013 (F1Plus / AFP) - Mark Webber mixed gritty realism with dry humour on Saturday after qualifying a disappointing fourth for Red Bull for Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix.

The retirement-bound Australian admitted he was unable to extract the maximum from his tyres in a dramatic rain-swept qualifying session at Interlagos.

"I never really felt comfortable," he said. "But with this weather who knows what is going to happen. I've got a chance if it stays the way it has been here for the last two days."

Webber will retire from Formula One after Sunday's race and go sportscar racing next season with Porsche.

After topping the times in Saturday's final free practice session, he had looked likely to be a threat for pole, but in the end it was Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel who stormed to his 45th career success.

"I just never felt comfortable on the last set [of tyres]," explained Webber. "It was better on the extreme [full wet tyres]. With the inters, I knew it was rubbish on the first lap - so I tried to get it on the second lap, and then the third lap.

"I thought I would be worse off anyway, so that was that."

He conceded that the changeable weather might be his only hope of ending his career by recording his 10th win.

"It makes it a lot trickier and it does open it up a lot," he said.

"We know that -- and history shows that when you have greasy wet races, intermediate, safety cars, full wets, driver errors, all sorts - well, it happens.

"But to win? Well, there are also other cars in front, not just Seb [Vettel] unfortunately. He is the favourite and he has won the last 1000 races -- so we will just have to wait and see how it goes!"
