Ecclestone believes US team may join grid in 2015/16

The team, run by Gene Haas, would be the first US team on the grid since the 80s.

April 3, 2014 (F1plus / Rosie Baillie) - Bernie Ecclestone believes Gene Haas team may be given the green light to join Formula One, though the FIA are yet to confirm anything.

After the FIA opened up applications for new teams to join Haas, co-owner of NASCAR team Stewart-Haas Racing, put forward an application which Ecclestone feels will be accepted.

"I think Haas will be accepted," Ecclestone told UK newspaper The Independent.

"They have got the money but it's a question of whether they are going to spend it."

It was reported last year that several teams were struggling with finances and Ecclestone warned that a new team would need deep pockets just to last four years.

"A billion would last a new team owner four years," he said.

Applications for a 12th team to join the sport in 2015/16 opened at the end of last year, though the FIA commented that the grid would remain at 11 teams if there were no viable applications.

The FIA were supposed to make a final decision at the end of February but missed the deadline.

If Haas’ application is accepted the team will be the first US team on the grid since the 1980s.

In 2010 US F1 was set to join the grid but pulled out due to lack of finances.
