The Spanish Grand Prix is usually the first opportunity teams have to bring big updates to the car and can be a big turning point in the season.

“It will be now a race of development which we cannot fall behind.” Perez said.

Force India are currently ahead of Ferrari and Red Bull in the constructors’ title but Perez doesn’t think that will last long.

“I think that will be the case, with Ferrari and Red Bull.” he said when asked if he thought the bigger teams could ‘outspend’ Force India.

“But as I say, we need to make sure that we are the next team in that race and that we keep close to them as we been in the first couple of races.”

The Silverstone based team have had quite a strong season so far but a lack of downforce is preventing them from being more competitive.

“We’re lacking quite a lot of rear downforce.” he said.

“When you need the downforce, we don’t have the best car, we’re not even close to having the best car.”

“Hopefully we can move forward, we can understand the car better and more forward as quickly as possible.”

Mercedes may be leading the leading the constructors’ championship by 96 points but Perez believes they can be caught and thinks Red Bull have the best car.

“We’ve seen in the past Formula One, the season is so long, four races is nothing.” he said.

“They’re quite ahead and I believe they have a big gap to anyone else but I think Ferrari and Red Bull are going to close the gap.”

“I believe Red Bull has the best car, in my opinion they’ve got the best car in the grid.”
