Lotus win some and lose some in qualifying

Mixed fortunes with Grosjean starting 5th and Maldonado 21st.

BARCELONA, 10th May 2014 (F1 Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Romain Grosjean qualified fifth in Spain while Pastor Maldonado will start 21st.

Grosjean’s fifth place is his best qualifying position of the year and he hopes tomorrow will be the day he picks up his first points of the year.

“That [fifth place] would be nice. I don’t know, we’ll do our best. Yesterday’s long run from Pastor looking pretty interesting.” Grosjean said.

it goes without saying that it would be good to finally score some points.”

Like other drivers the Frenchman complained that the Pirelli choices for this circuit were leaving them battling for grip.

“I think this weekend we’re really struggling with the grip of the tyres, they’re very much on the edge. If you go over there’s no grip, as the grip level is low it’s easy to go over, it’s a cycle.” he said.

On the other side of the garage Maldonado’s qualifying session was cut short after he spun into the wall at Turn 3 early in Q1.

The incident means he will start the Spanish Grand Prix 21st just ahead of Jean-Eric Vergne who received a 10 place grid drop after a tyre came loose during FP2.

I had a big chance of doing well in the session but unfortunately I lost the car with big snap oversteer in the exit of the corner in turn 3.” Maldonado said.

“With tyres available for the race we can work on the strategy and hopefully recover places on Sunday.”
