The double world champion says the team need to work on every area of the car.

BARCELONA, 11th May 2014 (F1 Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Fernando Alonso says his sixth place was the maximum he could do in Spain.

Alonso finished one lap behind race winner Lewis Hamilton at his home race.

“I think we did the maximum today, obviously we are not totally happy with finishing so far behind the leaders.” Alonso said.

“The race has been difficult, the weekend has been difficult in general with a lack of grip and difficult balance on the car.”

The last time Ferrari won a race was 12 months ago when Alonso won the Spanish Grand Prix.

He said the team needed to do better and work on every area of the car but couldn’t see them being able to fight for a win soon.

“we were not in a position to fight for more wins in these 12 months. We need to do better. It probably will not happen soon and you know we have been lapped today.” the double world champion said.

“We just need to concentrate and work in every area of the car and become stronger as soon as possible.”

The team are third in the constructors’ championship and Alonso rated their season so far as ‘so-so’.

“The season has been so-so, we are not quick enough, we have been lapped today. We were ninth and tenth in Bahrain, we are not on the first row of the grid and everything, but we are third in the world championship.”

Alonso and Raikkonen provided fans with an interesting battle towards the end of the race which saw Alonso pass his teammate for sixth place.

“It’s think it’s much better to fight for first and second. When you fight for fifth and sixth or sixth and seventh it’s not the same pleasure.” Alonso said.

“We need to do better and fight for better positions.”
