Rosberg needed one more lap to take the lead

The German feels he could have passed Hamilton had the race been one lap longer

BARCELONA, 11th May 2014 (F1 Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Nico Rosberg feels he could have passed Lewis Hamilton had the race been one lap longer.

As the race came to a close a gripping battle heated up between the two Mercedes driver with Rosberg getting the gap down to 0.5 seconds at one points. He said that given one more lap he feels he could have taken the lead.

“I think one more [lap] to be honest, one more I could have given it a good go.” Rosberg said during the podium interview.

“I wasn’t close enough to give it a go there but next lap I would have.”

The Mercedes driver said he felt the race was lost during qualifying and the start.

“The race was really lost in qualifying and at the start. Those were the two opportunities I had.” he said.

“Qualifying was very very close...but the difference was not enough to get pole.”

“And then just had a poor start, so those were the two shots that I had at it and it didn’t work out.”

The Spanish Grand Prix was Hamilton’s fourth win of the year, which means he is now leading the drivers’ championship.

Rosberg said he was gutted to finish second but said there are plenty of chances left.

“So, a bit gutted but still, second place, still close to the championship and many more races to go anyway.”

By lap two Hamilton had pulled out a 2 second gap to Rosberg, but the race winner said he felt Rosberg was actually faster than him.

“I wasn’t fast enough really today; Nico was faster. I struggled a lot with the balance and really had to rely on my engineers a lot more to give me the gaps to try to find where I could find time.” Hamilton said on the podium.

Monaco is next on the calendar, where Rosberg came first last year and he says he is aiming to do the same this year.

“I’ll be going there to do it one better and to try and come first there and repeat the win from last year.”
