Mercedes test megaphone exhaust

Solutions to enhance the engines sound started to roll out.
Wednesday, May 14, 2014

14th May 2014 (F1plus / Rosie Baillie).- Mercedes tested a ‘megaphone’ style exhaust on day two of the Barcelona test.

The new style exhaust was tested on the W05 Hybrid with the aim of making the cars sound louder after some fans and race promoters complained that the 2014 cars sound too quiet.

Reports from those at the track varied. Some said it didn’t seem make a difference and others said it sounded the same but louder.

Many of the journalists covering the testing session and therefore the appearance of the now call ‘trumpet’, could not avoid to comment on the matter.

"Looks like Mercedes have put a vuvuzela on the back of their car," Reuters' Alan Baldwin wryly observed.

Leaving aesthetics aside, the focus is on weather the actual effect of enhancing the sound is worth it.

"So far no good news concerning the sound," reported German television RTL's Florian Koenig.

BBC correspondent Andrew Benson agreed that the initial reaction from fans was "almost totally negative".

Before we see a new style exhaust appearing at races, it will need to be thoroughly tested and agreed upon by all teams.
