Alonso feels the championship is out of reach

 June 27 (Andrés Rojas).- The European Grand Prix was not a type of nerve-eating type of racing, in spite of the fact that all 24 cars finished, there was not even one retirement.

However, such a tale is less important after we all realized the level of dominance that Sebastian Webber is showing. And that is something that is affecting –even emotionally- his closest competitors like Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso.

The Spaniard has raced very well lately and his team seems to be improving, but they are still far from poising a very serious threat, and worst of all, time is running out.

How helpless Alonso looked trying to closed the gap to Vettel to no avail. So the hopes of a home victory vanished, and second was the best and only option. At least the result made to appear at the podium in front of his countryman for the first time in four attempts at the Valencia Street Circuit.

Nevertheless, in losing more ground to Vettel following the 23-year-old's sixth win in eight races this season (plus two seconds finishes), Alonso is now fifth in the standings, 99 points adrift.

"I'm happy with the performance and the team moving forward from a difficult start to the season," Alonso said. "But the gap is 99 points, a lot, so obviously the Championship is not in our calculations at the moment, not in our hands.

"We just need to take things race by race, try to win the races we go to and just wait for some mistakes from Red Bull. But at the moment I don't think we can think of the Championship. We just need to see what happens in the last part of the season.

"We're still eight tenths to a second behind, so anyone who thinks we can win a Championship being that far behind doesn't understand Formula One."
