Vettel warns of Williams' pace

The world champion says the Mercedes powered cars will perform well on the straights.

7th June, 2014 (F1 Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Sebastian Vettel has warned of Williams' pace and says the team, who use a Mercedes power unit, will be quick on the straights.

Williams drivers Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas looked strong during qualifying and it looked like they would lock out the second row at one point.

“Strategy could be a bit of a surprise tomorrow, we’ll have to wait and see what happens but Williams is strong here and the Mercedes powered cars will be looking forward to the straights.” Vettel said.

Traditionally the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has been a circuit that Red Bull struggle at due to its long straights, however Vettel took his maiden win in Canada last year.

The quadruple world champion is aiming to keep up with the Mercedes to benefit from tow and will battle with the duo if he’s given the opportunity.

“I will try to stay as close as I can to the front two and get some tow. If we have a chance to attack them, then we should go for it.

Daniel Ricciardo qualified outside the top three for the third time this year and will start from sixth on the grid.

The Australian said Red Bull made adjustments to his car before his final qualifying run but they didn’t work as hoped.

“It was a bit scrappy on the final run, we made a couple of adjustments and it didn’t quite work out – but that’s hindsight!” Ricciardo said.

“We’ve made progress throughout the weekend and we were not too far off, but it’s disappointing to just miss out.”

“Hopefully we can get a good start tomorrow and see how we go, the strategy will be interesting.“
