SILVERSTONE, 3rd July, 2014 (F1 Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Esteban Gutierrez says that the C33 does not have a strength.
When asked whether he thought the issue was a downforce or powertrain issue, he said the issue was both.
“It’s a combination of both [powertrain and downforce], this is the problem we don’t have a strength at the moment.” Gutierrez said.
“Last year for example in the high speed corners we were pretty good and we knew that that was our strength.
“So when we get to a track that has high speed corners we said ‘okay this could be a good opportunity for us’. This year not even the high speed corners, not even the slow speed corners.
“everywhere it’s quite weak, so we are doing our best to take risk in a controlled way.”
The Mexican went on to say that Sauber were trying different things and taking controlled risks to try and improve the car.
“We are trying different things. We are taking risks at the moment. We are exploring with the car, taking different set up approaches because at the moment we are stuck and we don’t want to be stuck at this point.” he said.
“It’s not that we are doing it just closing the eyes and doing things that are crazy now, it’s really trying to find a way.”
At the Austrian Grand Prix the Sauber driver was handed a 10 place grid penalty for an unsafe release.
Gutierrez says this will not change how he approaches the weekend and says it wouldn’t really affect them that much anyway.
“We go maximum. To be honest, it doesn’t make a big difference to us because you know, in the best scenario, in an extraordinary result in qualifying would be maybe P11, so even that would put us in the back of the grid.
“I’m still going to push. We’re exploring different things in the setup so, try to get something better.”
