SILVERSTONE, 4th July 2014 (F1 Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Caterham had limited running on Friday at Silverstone when issues hit both of their cars.

The Leafield based team managed 30 laps in the morning and 52 laps in the afternoon after limited running for test driver Robin Frijns in the morning and Marcus Ericsson in the afternoon.

Frijns was in Kamui Kobayashi’s car during FP1 but spent most of the session out of the car as an electrical issue was causing misfires in the power unit.

“I did the installation lap and, except for a very minor issue with the radio, there weren’t any problems with the car.” Frijns explained.

“However, whilst waiting for the post-installation lap checks to be completed we found an electrical issue that was causing a misfire in the Power Unit.”

The Dutchman spent the majority of FP1 in the garage but was able to return to the track before the end of the session to tally up 11 laps and finish the session 20th overall.

“It wasn’t really easy to jump into the car be quick from the first lap onwards. Even though I wasn’t really on it fully, I just needed more laps.” he said.

“Of course, it’s not fun but it’s part of the job and it’s motorsport, things breakdown. It happens.”

Frijns last took part in a Friday session in Bahrain and said it wasn’t possible to judge how the car had changed since then as Bahrain and Silverstone are such different circuits.

“Well Bahrain’s completely different track than Silverstone, you can’t compare.” he said.

In the afternoon Ericsson missed the last 25 minutes of the session when he lost power, forcing him to pull into the old pit straights.

“on the third run I had a mechanical issue which meant I lost power and had to pull over in the old pits.” he said.

“We’ll need to make a proper assessment of what happened and to go through all the data tonight and then aim to keep improving tomorrow ahead of quali and the race.”

Cedrik Staudohar, Renault Sport F1 track support leader, confirmed Ericsson suffered an exhaust issue and they would run tests on both cars to make sure things run better tomorrow.

“On Marcus’ [Ericsson] car we had an issue with the exhaust this afternoon so we will check both engines thoroughly and run through some more tests to ensure everything runs correctly tomorrow.” Staudohar said.
