Split opinion at Sauber

While Esteban Gutierrez was happy with his day’s work, Adrian Sutil was much less so

SILVERSTONE, 4th July 2014 (F1 Plus / Graham Keilloh) - There was a split of opinion in the Sauber camp over the success of their opening day’s practice running at Silverstone in advance of the British Grand Prix.

On a day on which revised aerodynamics at the front of the C33 were debuted, while Esteban Gutiérrez was satisfied with the set¬up and the performance of the car Adrian Sutil by contrast was struggling with these.

Esteban Gutiérrez ended both practice sessions in 13th place and was happy with his day’s work

“Overall, it was a positive day and I think we are going in a good direction’ said Gutierrez afterwards.

“We were working aggressively on the set¬up characteristics; this is the way to find something new and to explore opportunities.

“In the morning we were struggling with some set¬up changes, but we are trying to find a compromise. Moreover, we still need to find stability when braking.
Tomorrow is qualifying, so we need to keep pushing.”

Adrian Sutil however gave up his car to reserve pilot Giedo van der Garde for the first practice session of the day and then could only set a best mark over half a second away from Gutierrez’s best in the second session. He was less happy with his lot than was his teammate, and appeared to attribute some of his struggle to his loss of running.

“I could not run very much today, as I had to sit out the first practice session. It was difficult to feel comfortable with the car during the afternoon session’ said the German.

‘The set¬up was not ideal, and that’s why the car did not react in a way we hoped for. We changed something, but didn’t get the reaction we wanted. We need to analyze the data to understand what the issue was.”

Sauber’s Head of Track Engineering Giampaolo Dall’Ara also commented on Sutil’s woes, how it compromised his efforts as well as indicated that the team was doing its best to resolve the matter: “(With Sutil) we had a difficult day, because Adrian was not happy with the balance.

“As a consequence of this we skipped the long runs and just concentrated on working on the set¬up of his car. This evening we have to work with Adrian to decide what’s best set¬up wise, and we will check the car to find out whether something is wrong.”
