Best ever qualifying session for Marussia

Both drivers say they could have improved without yellow flags at the end of Q2
Saturday, July 5, 2014

SILVERSTONE, 5th July 2014 (F1 Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Marussia took advantage of changing weather conditions at Silverstone which resulted in their best ever qualifying performance.

For the first time in the team’s history both Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton got through to Q2 and were on the cusp of Q3 with Bianchi in 12th and Chilton 13th.

Chilton will drop down to 18th place due to a five place grid penalty for a gearbox change.

The Briton wasn’t disheartened by the penalty and feels changeable conditions could help them move forward tomorrow.

“The Team has done an incredible job today, making some fantastic calls and putting us right where we needed to be at exactly the right time.” Chilton said.

“Obviously I’ve got the five place penalty for this morning’s gearbox change, which will drop me back, but a good qualifying session was what I needed because of that penalty, and that is what we’ve achieved, so I can’t be disheartened.”

“It’s a fantastic feeling to have had such a good qualifying in front of the British fans and I can’t wait for the race now.”

“I’m ahead of the Caterhams and maybe similar conditions will be what we need to progress because we’re very strong under pressure, as we’ve shown.”

Towards the end of Q2 Esteban Gutierrez brought out the yellow flags when he ran off the circuit. Chilton believes they could have qualified higher had that not happened, a feeling that was echoed by Bianchi.

“I had a really good lap and then the Yellow flags came out for Gutierrez’s spin. Had we not encountered these I could have improved for sure and who knows what might have happened then.” said Bianchi.
