Sauber rues a missed opportunity

The Swiss team was left wondering what might have been after both cars finished qualifying off track

SILVERSTONE, 5th July 2014 (F1 Plus / Graham Keilloh) - All at Sauber were left to rue an opportunity missed in the changeable conditions of Silverstone’s qualifying session today, after both cars ended their day off the track.

Adrian Sutil made it into the second session of the qualifying hour, but that he went off track during his last lap in Q1 and got stuck in the gravel trap meant that he couldn’t take part in it. As a result he was classified in P16.

Esteban Gutierrez also reached the second qualifying part, but in that session lost control of his car and hit the barrier. He finished up classified in P14, and also faces a grid penalty here due to an unsafe release in the Austrian Grand Prix race.

The frustration at all of this of Team Principal Monisha Kaltenborn was clear afterwards: ‘The team worked well, and the engineers made the right decisions. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to benefit from that.

‘We lost the chance for a good qualifying result. In situations like this one we have to improve significantly.’

Giampaolo Dall’Ara, the team’s Head of Track Engineering, outlined similarly that he felt that the outfit did everything it could, but the excursions by the drivers scuppered matters.

‘Qualifying brought typical Silverstone weather with ever changing conditions. As a result, it was important to be on the right tyres at the right time, which we managed to achieve.'

'Technically, everything went according to plan, the performance of the cars was okay. Unfortunately both drivers went off and we didn’t manage to convert this into a good result. This is very disappointing.’

Sutil admitted to an error but also suggested that the handling of the C33 was a factor: ‘Unfortunately, I made a mistake today. As I went off the track, I did not notice that the preceded corner was very wet. I lost the rear of the car and got stuck in the gravel trap.

‘The conditions were tricky for all of us. As the car was difficult to drive and as we were on the limit, those mistakes can easily happen.’

Gutierrez meanwhile commented: ‘On my last lap I got caught up by a faster car behind. I was trying to push as much as I could. Unfortunately, I lost the car and hit the wall. We were both on our fast lap and I was trying to finish mine as well as possible.’
