10th July, 2014 (F1Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Charles Pic says that Pirelli's 18-inch tyre design will provide teams with a big challenge as they will need to build a new car around the tyres.
On the second day of the Silverstone test Pic got behind the wheel of the Lotus E22 and became the first driver to test the 18-inch concept tyres.
In the morning he carried out evaluation tests looking at how the 18-inch tyres affect the cars aerodynamics.
During the afternoon’s running he returned to the 13-inch tyres currently used in Formula One to carry out construction evaluation to complete a total of 39 laps.
"I think if we go one day to this type of tyre [18-inch] it will be a big challenge." Pic told journalists on Wednesday.
"First for the team because they will have to build a completely new car around this."
"The philosophy is completely different and you would need to build all the car around this type of tyre. I think it will also be a challenge for the driver because they are completely different."
Nick Chester, technical director for Lotus, said the point of the test was to provide Pirelli with loading information and show fans and stakeholders how the cars would look with bigger tyres.
“The objective of this was to give Pirelli some initial loading information as well as for F1 fans and stakeholders to see what the car looked like in this configuration.” said Chester.
“It has been interesting to hear all the feedback about the different tyre concept and it’s an area we’re happy to work on for the future."
