Schumacher prays for Silverstone rain

The German hopes to race on wet so he can challenge better the leaders. His Mercedes is not competitive enough yet.

SILVERSTONE, United Kingdom, July 7, 2011 (AFP) - Michael Schumacher believes he can finish this weekend's British Grand Prix on the podium... if it rains.

The 42-year-old Mercedes driver has yet to finish higher than fourth place since his return to Formula One and conceded that in spite of upgrades to his car, it would be very difficult to challenge rival teams in dry conditions.

However, the seven-time world champion said he would relish the opportunity of competing on a wet Silverstone track and believes he could secure a top three finish in front of his team's home crowd.

"I hope it rains," said Schumacher. "I think in the rain we could physically talk about a podium. Whereas in dry conditions, although we may have an improvement in the car, I guess a podium would be out of reach.

"The guys have been working very hard, I would obviously like to give them a good moment when we have our Sunday evening barbeque. It would be great to come back to the home base with something in my hand."
