Sutil encouraged by 11th place

The German finished just outside the points, matching the team’s best result of the year.

HUNGARORING, 27th July 2014 (F1Plus / Katie Grimmett) - Sauber F1 has endured its worth ever season in Formula 1 and head into the summer break without a single championship point.

Since débuting its C33 earlier this year, the Swiss outfit has struggled to complete the full race distances. In 2014, Adrian Sutil and Esteban Gutierrez have ten retirements between them.

However, Sutil admits he is encouraged by his eleventh place finish at the Hungaroring this weekend, noting that the unpredictable conditions suited their car.

“Finishing in P11 was very close to gaining one point”, he explained.

“It was not an easy race, especially at the beginning with the difficult weather conditions and the two safety car periods”, he continued noting the changeable nature of the Hungarian race.

At one point, the German was lapping comfortably in seventh but later revealed that a small communication error cost them a few positions.

“During the first safety car period we made our first pit stop. When I came to the box I had to wait as Esteban had not finished yet. I did lose some time, but I was fighting back”.

Sauber’s more experienced driver also spoke of his battle with McLaren who were struggling for grip and pace throughout the seventy laps.

“In the corners I was faster than Jenson (Button), but I could not overtake him as he did not make any mistakes and drove away on the straights”.

As the team prepare for the summer break, Sutil reflected his performance this weekend.

“It was a positive day as we came closer to the teams in front of us, and this is what counts”, he concluded, summarising his race overall.

Esteban Gutierrez retired from the race after an MGU-K failure caused him to lose control, derailing the team’s initial promise. At the time, the Mexican was also in contention for a top ten finish.

Sauber currently sit tenth in the constructors’ battle, two points behind Marussia.
