SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, August 22nd, 2014 (F1Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Max Chilton says he made the decision to sit out of the Belgian Grand Prix to help the team.

On Thursday Marussia said reserve driver Alexander Rossi would race instead of Max Chilton while 'contractual issues' were resolved. Following a u-turn Chilton will now take part in the race.

Chilton said he made the decision to give up his seat to try and help the team but that decision was changed overnight.

"The good thing is that I made the decision, I have always made the same decision, I do the best I can for the team," said Chilton.

"I've always said I'm a team player, I like to think what I did was a team player decision and then it got changed this morning."

"I know everyone likes to come up with their reasonings but I can guarantee you that it was a goodwill gesture and it got changed overnight and I'm happy to be back in the car."

The Marussia driver would not comment on why he was initially supposed to sit out of this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix.

"It's not for me to comment on, the main thing is that I'm back in the car," he said.

"There was a brief blip but we've kind of both agreed on it and that's why I'm back in the car and the team owner wanted me back in the car."

Chilton says he is hoping he will score Marussia's next set of points and is confident that when their issues are resolved nothing will stop them.

"I've always said that I would have love to get the first points, I know I didn't so I'd love to get the next set of points. I really think we can achieve it.

We are struggling a bit at the moment but as soon as that does get resolved, I think nothing's going to stop us and next year can hopefully be a promising year."

The Briton was back in the car for FP2 and finished the session 18th fastest.
