SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, August 23rd, 2014 (F1Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Fernando Alonso said he was surprised by the pace of the F14 T in the wet after qualifying fourth for the Belgian Grand Prix.

The Spaniard qualified in fourth place in a wet qualifying session and was surprised by how quick the F14 T was in the wet.

“normally on Friday’s we are more competitive than when they [Mercedes] put the full power on Saturday’s and Sunday’s,” Alonso said.

“So we expect to be struggling a little bit more today than yesterday”

“I’m definitely happy with the result,”

“Obviously starting in the first two rows is quite a difficult thing to do, we haven’t had any qualifying where we’ve performed at this level in the season,

The Spaniard wasn’t sure why they performed so well in qualifying but thought the level of downforce or lack of temperatures in the tyres might have helped.

“so definitely the rain or the conditions, or the car with this level of downforce works a little bit better and we managed to do a good lap and be in the first two rows.”

“it was probably the characteristics of our car, perhaps not putting temperature in the tyre or whatever,

“if we compare the two Ferrari’s it seems that we both lose performance in wet or we have more distance to the Mercedes in the wet.”

The Spaniard feels a podium finish is a possibility and says they need to be ready in case one of the Mercedes drivers suffers a technical problem.

“We’ll see, I think the possibility is there, no doubt. i think that we are in a good position,” said Alonso.

“we know that Mercedes even if they look very quick, they have some mechanical problems in the last races so we just need to be  there ready to take any opportunity.”

The Spaniard summed up the weekend so far as ‘perfect’.

“I think it’s the second best qualifying for me here after the McLaren 2007,”

“now as I said I’m in front of the Williams, I’m one second in front of my teammate. I won here four times, it definitely has been a perfect weekend so far.”
