Vergne's qualifying hampered by exhaust issue

Nevertheless, the Frenchman is positive about starting 12th.

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, August 23rd, 2014 (F1Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Jean-Eric Vergne had an exhaust issue in Q2 which meant he only had one shot at qualifying.

The Frenchman was unable to run at the beginning of the session because he had an exhaust problem. He will start the Belgian Grand Prix from 12th place.

Toro Rosso technical director James Key felt the team sent him out too early as the track improved later in the session.

"With JEV, unfortunately he had a clap on his exhaust system which came loose and needed to be tightened up," Key said.

"That meant that he missed the initial run and he had a single opportunity at the end.

"I also think we probably could have sent him out a bit later than we did, because the track was definitely better towards the end of the session but at that time it was difficult to tell.

All these factors really effected his session."

The Frenchman was upbeat about his grid position as tomorrow's race is due to be dry.

"we have seen during the weekend that we have got the pace to do well, long runs looked pretty good," Vergne said.

"Considering that tomorrow the race should be in dry conditions, starting from P12 is not too bad, as everything is possible."
