Double retirement for Lotus in Belgium

This is Lotus' third double retirement of the season.

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, August 24th, 2014 (F1Plus / Rosie Baillie) - Lotus suffered a double retirement at the Belgian Grand Prix when Pastor Maldonado retired with a suspected exhaust problem and Romain Grosjean reported that the car was 'dangerous'.

Grosjean obtained damage after his lap pit stop which meant he lost downforce. The Frenchman told the team that the car felt 'dangerous' and they chose to retire him.

"Unfortunately, he [Grosjean] picked up some damage after his final pit stop which made the car a real handful for him," said Alan Permane, Lotus trackside operations director.

"he radioed in that the car was dangerous, so the only sensible thing to do was retire."

Grosjean said the car felt better than expected but said damage early on in the race compromised him.

"The car was pretty good; the pace was much better than expected, which is encouraging," said Grosjean.

"Unfortunately the race was compromised early on, we had to change the nose on the first lap and we picked up some damage later on from debris on the track. We lost a lot of downforce as a result so we retired the car."

Maldonado was forced to retire on the opening lap of the race with a suspected exhaust failure.

"Pastor suffered from what looks to be an exhaust failure early on in the race," said Permane.

This is the team's third double retirement of the year after both cars failed to finish in Australia and Canada.

Lotus are currently eighth in the constructors' championship with eight points. Their closest rivals are Toro Rosso who have 19 points.
