Belgian Grand Prix: driver of the day

Find out who our driver of the day was at round 12 of the 2014 F1 season.

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, August 25th, 2014 (F1Plus / Rosie Baillie) - There have been a few races this year where I've had a geniunely tough time trying to choose my driver of the day and the Belgian Grand Prix was one of those races.

I have three candidates: Daniel Ricciardo, Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen, all of which drove strong races which rewarded them with a good haul of points.

Ricciardo took his third race win of the year after being there to capitalise on Mercedes mistakes. Nico Rosberg did begin to close in on him towards the end of the race on fresh tyres but there just weren’t enough laps left for the German to get the job done.

This isn’t the first time Ricciardo has been there to take the win when something hasn’t gone to plan for Mercedes - he was there in Canada and Hungary.

It is mathematically possible for the Red Bull Racing driver to win the drivers’ championship still, especially with double points at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. It’s not completely out of the question to think that Ricciardo can make those points up if he keeps being there when something goes wrong.

Ricciardo has continued to prove his worth this year, when at the end of last year many people thought he would be overshadowed by four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel.

Valtteri Bottas once again got the most out of the Williams to finish on the podium for the fourth time this year.

During a wet qualifying session Bottas qualified six but on a dry track during the race he was competitive and able to pass other drivers, including the Mercedes, to claim the final step on the podium.

Finishing just off the podium was Kimi Raikkonen, who put in his best performance of the year by finishing fourth. Previously his highest finish was sixth place in Hungary.

The Ferrari driver just seems to ‘get’ Spa-Francorchamps and has won there four times before.

2014 has been a tough year for Ferrari and it can be frustrating to see two world champions struggle to get the best out of the F14 T, so it's always nice to see something go Raikkonen's way.

After much deliberation my driver of the day at the Belgian Grand Prix was Ricciardo.

Ricciardo drove a surprisingly strong race considering Spa is not a circuit that should suit their car. Everything worked perfectly for Red Bull and Ricciardo and they are still the only team and driver other than Mercedes to win a race this year.

On a more personal level though, while I do enjoy the rivalry between the Mercedes duo, I do love it when the title goes down to the final race and there are three or four drivers who mathematically stand a chance of winning.

To see Ricciardo mopping up points Mercedes missed out on makes that more likely, though he will need to rely on them making a few mistakes or having issues to really stand a chance of taking the title in Abu Dhabi.
