As a fan for as long as I can recall, Motor Racing remains something which I am deeply passionate about and continue to take pleasure from. Right at the top of the ladder sits Formula One and like many others I was first drawn to it by going to meetings or absorbing it through various media channels from a young age – something which I still continue to revel in. However, there is more to the sport than lights to flag racing; instead it rests upon a melting pot of various subjects and as I have grown older, my interests have matured to have a profound effect on giving opinion and what I focus on.
Through my time as writer and podcaster on GPFocus I have found myself drawn to maintain balance and remain attentive to detail at all times. Coming from an academic background, I tend to centre my views on the political side of the sport – be it from the high-level workings of the Powerbrokers to the decisions made on-track and how this can impact the atmosphere within teams or on driver’s minds.
Equally, my appreciation and fascination of the sport’s history means that many of my articles tend to look to the past to aid the explanation of the present.
Overall, it is hoped that my writing will be useful to fans and help them to engage or foster debate about some of Formula One’s prevalent issues.
Senna, Prost, Mansell or Piquet?
None. Given the stark conditions to machinery, rules and regulations and professionalism throughout I do believe it is possible to directly compare the sport’s greatest drivers.
Fangio, Clark, Stewart, Prost or Schumacher?
Same Applies as above.
Best Grand Prix Ever
Ultimately there are far too many to round off.
Best Circuit of Them All
Some of my personal favourites include: Charade, Rouen, Montjuïc, Österreichring, Imola, the Old Hockenheimring and Silverstone prior to its latest evolution. Of course it would be wrong to leave out Spa and the Nordschleife too.
Best Season Ever
from Hawthorn pipping Moss in ’58 and Clark cleaning up in ’63 to the heartbreaking and dramatic events of ’76 and ’82. In a more modern sense, contenders include ’94, ’97 and 2007.
Best F1 Car Ever
It goes between the Alfa Romeo 158/9, the Lotus 25 or the McLaren MP4/1,
What Would You Say to Bernie Ecclestone?
“Thank you for everything.” He may be controversial, but I believe that he does not get enough credit for his part in building the sport we have today.
What Would You Like Formula 1 to Have or Change?
regain the initiative in the development of technology for the road and environment.
