May 20th, 2013 (F1plus).- It’s hardly a secret that Williams is having an awful season. A promising winter testing suggested that the FW-35 was going to put up a fight and maybe lead the middle pack, but that has not been the case.
Not a single point has been earned, and that is not by bad luck, but rather because a simple out of pace machine, uncompetitive enough to land every race well off the points.
The team acknowledges its problems but trusts to be improving, even if little by little. Monaco might be a good place for a boost, given the nature of the track of slow speed corners, bumpy ride, and the fact that one of its drivers – Pastor Maldonado- has been relatively good there, especially in other categories such as GP2 where we won twice.
Still, Mike Coughlan, Williams’ Technical Director, projects optimism ahead of the Monaco GP.
“We made some small steps forward in Barcelona but it was still a difficult weekend for us.
“We have a number of upgrades for Monaco designed for the unique layout. We need to keep working hard though as it’s not been the start to the year we had hoped for. “ He said.
Confident Maldonado understands the challenges he faces on board of the FW35 along with the demanding Monaco circuit.
“I have always been very competitive at Monaco, doing well there in GP2, so I always look forward to this race as I feel very comfortable driving the circuit.
“Monaco is a very difficult challenge, both mentally and physically, as you have to try and find the limits of the car with no margin for error if you push too hard. “ He Said.
Like most drivers, Maldonado gives the proper importance to qualifying as he says “70%” of the race result relies on our grid position.
On the other side, Valtteri Bottas come with no experience in this circuit, and exciting as it might be for him, it will be difficult.
“This will be my first time racing in Monaco... It’s definitely the most challenging race on the calendar for the drivers, being an old school street circuit with no room for mistakes.
“I’m looking forward to the challenge of being on the limit at all times while being so close to the walls.
As for the FW35, the Finn understands the implication in the set up for a circuit like this.
“It’s very challenging to get the car right at Monaco as it’s very different to all other circuits. There is a lot of undulation, so you need a good car set up to keep all the wheels on the ground around the whole circuit. It’s also quite bumpy which affects the ride height of the car.” Bottas concluded.
