Biografía del Piloto
Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1981, Felipe Massa has the honor of being the last driver to share responsibilities with Michael Schumacher at Ferrari, when he came to replace his compatriot Rubens Barrichello in 2006.
Massa stared in karts –like almost everyone in the business- in Brazil and then in Formula Renault and Formula Chevrolet. In 2002 Sauber hired him as test driver, but after the preseason the teams offers him to share the stage with Nick Heidfeld. His first season was marked by several highs and lows: first, he got a fifth at the GP of Spain, showing flashes of superb skills, but at the same time he makes many mistakes that either takes his car out of the track or with a broken engine.
In Sauber he develops his career until 2006, in spite of a hiatus in 2003 after losing his seat in the Swiss team in favor of Frentzen. However, in that same year Ferrari welcome him as test driver, something that allows him to make friends and get to know key people within in the most important team in F1.
Massa returned to Sauber in 2004 to share the duties with Giancarlo Fishichella and Jacques Villeneuve. The Brazilian claims to have learned a lot in those early years of his career from them.
His arrival at Ferrari is not at all what it was expected, since he fails to serve as Schumacher’s wing as Barrichello did, and the German lost the crown against Fernando Alonso. However, the Italians still believed in him, and in 2007 Kimi Raikkonen came to replace the “Kaiser”, but this time, he helped the Finn to become champion in hard fought championship.
Massa’s best chance for greatness came in the 2008 season in which he fought to the very last turn of the last Grand Prix (Brazil) for the championship title. Felipe earned six wins, one more than the eventual champion, Lewis Hamilton. It is hard to forget the shift on reactions seen on the McLaren and Ferrari’s pits.
His next two seasons are marked by misfortune. A very serious accident in Hungary in 2009 left him out of the last half of the tournament. It occurred that a spring coil tossed by Rubens Barrichello car hit him in the helmet at almost 200mph causing him a severe concussion and neck injuries. There was fear for his life, but the Brazilian recovered was ready for the 2010 season, in which he found a new partner that would definitely moved him to second in priority within the Ferrari ranks, Fernando Alonso. His return was far from great, Massa did not achieved a single victory and finished in tenth place overall.
For 2011, more was expected, especially knowing that a full year has passed since the 2009 accident. Sadly, the Brazilian had a poor performance, and this, regardless of this relatively uncompetitive Ferrari, since his teammate Alonso seriously outscored him
Multiple incidents with Hamilton (mostly caused by the English), basic racing mistakes, lack of speed and aggressiveness, often relegated him to finish in the middle of the point’s position in each race. Eleven times Massa crossed the line in 5th or 6th, never better than that, well below Alonso who climbed to the podium ten times.
The 2012 season ahead of Massa might his the last in Ferrari, unless something unlikely happens. If the Brazilian is back to 2008 form, his career may be extended a few years in a competitive team.
Nevertheless, throughout his Formula 1 careers Massa has shown discipline, hard work and displayed flashes of great talent that put him in reserved league.
