Biografía del Piloto

The young driver was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 1990. Sergio Perez started his career with a stint in the Skip Barber Racing School in the US; all this under the sponsorship of the giant telecommunications company, Telmex, which has been on his side since then.

Perez went to Europe in 2005 to compete in German Formula BMW, where he finished in 11th place, to then improve next year by finishing 6th. His progress continued, passing through the British Formula 3 in 2007, from which he became its junior champion, racking up 14 wins in 21 rounds. The following year, at the more competitive "Premier International Class", he finished in 4th place.

Next step was the GP2 Asia Series for the 08-09 seasons where he teamed with Vitaly Petrov. Two wins came, but its final position in the standings would be 7th. The following spring in European GP2 results were mixed, and he ended in 12th. His big break would be in 2010 with the Barwa Addax team, since he captured 5 victories, including one at Monaco where he was able to hold off a faster and eventually champion that year, Pastor Maldonado. Perez finished second in the tournament.

In October it was confirmed that the young Mexican would compete in the Formula 1 with Sauber, which in turn would be sponsored by Telmex. He would be the fifth Mexican driver to race in the category.

Just starting the 2011 season, in his first race, Sergio Perez gave an impressive performance by crossing he chequered flag in 7th place in the Australian GP. However, he was later disqualified for technical issues, which nevertheless did not taint his achievement.

It was not until the fifth round at Spain when the Mexican earned his first points in Formula 1, which were obtained through a respectable ninth place.

The next round would mark his young career. In the qualifying session for the Monaco GP, Perez, lost control of his car just exiting the tunnel, hitting the lateral defense, sliding until a TecPro barrier stopped him cold with a heavy impact. The slow motion footage showed the driver holding his head just before the final collision as a protective measure. He was conscious but got a concussion, as a consequence he did not take part in the race the next day.

For the subsequent race in Canada, Perez participated in the first practice session, but chose quit for the weekend, citing dizziness and not feeling 100% fit to compete and was replaced by Pedro de la Rosa. The Mexican turned for the European GP in Valencia, where he finished 11th, but it was in England where he earned his best finish of the season with an excellent 7th place, and after starting from 12th.

On July 28, the Sauber team announced it would retain him and Kamui Kobayashi for the 2012 season, generating confidence and continuity towards the objectives.

Perez gathered three finishes in the points with a 10th in Singapore, 8th in Japan, and ending with a 10th in India. He finished the season with 14 points.

By 2012, more is expected of Sergio Perez, highlighting greater maturity and concentration. With the Sauber team developing a more competitive and reliable car, better results are likely.
